Kahaner ONR Asia [kahaner@xroads.cc.u-tokyo.ac.jp] Re: GMD Conf on Jap Info--Science, Technology & Commerce, 25 Oct 1989. 25 Jan 1991 This conference brought together a number of Western experts on Japanese-Science-Information, including C. Uyehara, J. Bloom, and M. Harris, as well as their Japanese counterparts. The style of the papers is breezy, and several refute the claim that there is not enough information from Japan coming to the West. Instead, the writers emphasize that it is often not put to use, or even actively resisted. The papers contain excellent references and explanations about sources such as databases, translation services, etc. Haon's paper gives a clear and readable description of Japanese government agencies and their role in supporting research. Those interested in machine translation will also find good descriptions of the progress in this area, as of 1989. Dr. U. Wattenbery, GMD's Tokyo Director (see my report GMD, 6 Dec 1990) was kind enough to give me a copy of the Proceedings of this conference, and we have prepared the list of titles/authors below.
