gazette@watserv1.waterloo.edu ( Chris Redmond - Internal Communications Office ) (11/22/90)
This newsgroup has been created at the request of the office of internal communications, which is part of the University of Waterloo's department of Information and Public Affairs. It is intended to bear some similarity to the weekly printed Gazette, which is also a product of the internal communications office. The group will be moderated by me. My name is Chris Redmond, I am director of internal communications and editor of the Gazette, I have an adjunct appointment as assistant professor in the department of English, I write well and type badly, I have four sickly plants and a Gund bear named Brutus in my office, and I have only a tentative idea so far of what this newsgroup will look like, say, a year from now. It will contain some material from the Gazette: occasionally in advance, more usually on the day when the Gazette appears in print on campus. It may also include other material of a similar kind that does not make it into the Gazette, such as continuing updates on urgent news stories. Probably it will contain more of the full original texts of documents than the Gazette has room for. Submissions from anyone on campus are welcome on the same basis as letters to the editor of the printed Gazette. In addition, requests to have announcements made in this newsgroup will be considered on their merits. This is not an appropriate place for postings announcing coming events. The intention is for this newsgroup to maintain the same flavour and editorial freedom as the printed Gazette. Its content does not necessarily reflect official university policy. Suggestions and comments on the content of the group are welcome, as are requests for specific postings, although there is no guarantee that I will be able to meet all the requests. I and my office are in the business of gathering and disseminating information, not the business of making official statements. The first substantive posting, to appear in this group later today, will include the membership and terms of reference for the new Advisory Committee on Network News. This information was received too late to appear in detail in today's printed Gazette.
