Front-page stories in today's Gazette:
(1) Hernan Crespo, re-elected president of Canadian Union of
Public Employees local 793, says relations between his union
and UW management are much better than they were last year,
when a strike was narrowly averted.
He says people (his union members and presumably others) don't
mind working hard, but they take a close look at how they're
compensated.
And he has a budget-trimming suggestion for the university: freeze
the salaries of all staff (not faculty) now making more than
$50,000 a year.
(2) Targets for the number of women faculty members in the university,
institution-wide and department by department, are announced by
the provost, based on figures provided by the departments. The
goal: an increase of more than 50 per cent in the current number
of women professors, to about 148 of them, by the year 1999.
