The following memo from Dr. Alan George, UW's provost, has been distributed to all staff members, dated May 21: I am pleased to accept the recommendation of the Provost's Advisory Committee on Staff Compensation to increase the salary ranges of non-academic, non-union staff by 5.2% effective July 1, 1991. This recommendation is subject to Board of Governors' approval. The Committee has also recommended some changes in the salary structure as well as to the Staff Development and Training Fund. These will be discussed in more detail at a meeting for department heads to be held at a later date. As always, individual salary increases will be determined by performance and position in the salary range. There has been no decision about faculty salary increases yet. The report of the mediator, made public last week, indicated that faculty association and management negotiators were fairly far apart, and suggested that they compromise on a 5.75 per cent increase. The salary procedure requires that the chairman of the salary committee -- this year Dr. Pat Rowe of the psychology department -- make a binding final-offer selection, that is, she must choose either the final faculty association proposal or the final management proposal if the negotiators cannot reach agreement. A decision seems likely in the next few days.
