[net.followup] more interference

Here is a really good one for some of you EEs out there.
I have a UDS 212 lp modem (direct connect, bell 212a only), and a VC2100
(volker criag vt100 emulator, reasonably well sheilded).
These are in a room in a very old dorm (circa 1917 I think).
The phone lines are retrofit. The wiring is probably questionable.
I also have a small fridge. Every n'th time the compressor on the fridge
starts up, the modem 'receives' garbage until it receives a real char.
(quoting very important in last line).
That is, it sends garbage to the tty until it gets a real char.
It seems this only happens if the modem was receiving a char when the
compressor starts (therefore problem worst when entering text, but is never
severe).
Any one have any guesses? (about cause and solution).
(It seems to me that this is a very good problem in very applied
engineering, especially for poor grad students).
