I received about 9 responses to my question about which macro package people preferred to use with TROFF. Since there were also some additional responses from people wanting to see the results, I'm posting them here. The responses can be divided into four categories (the number of votes follows in parentheses): 1. those who favor -me. (4) 2. those who favor -ms. (2) 3. those who don't like either. (1) 4. those who use a different package depending on the application. (2) The people who like -me seemed to feel more strongly about their preference. Some of the reasons were: -me has fewer bugs, it has more nice features, it's features work with both nroff and troff, it's easier to modify, and it runs more quickly than ms. Some of the reasons for liking -ms were: -ms has fewer bugs than -me, it's easier to modify, and is "slightly" more powerful. One person didn't like either because -ms is too rigid, and because "-me has more bugs in it than my vegetable garden". This person had written his own macro package. Finally there are the people who said it depends on the application. They seemed to feel that if the objective was to get something out in a hurry, -ms was the way to go, however to do more complicated things with footnotes and keeps, -me was the package to use.
