[comp.graphics.visualization] SOURCE CODE AVAILABLE SOFTWARE: BRLCAD IMAGE PROC PKG

annala@neuro.usc.edu (A J Annala) (01/05/91)

Another package of scientific visualization programs available in
source code form supporting interactive design and ray tracing of
3D CSG models and 2D greyscale/color image processing is BRLCAD -
from the Army Ballistic Research Laboratory. This package is not
available via ftp; however, BRL will put a complete copy of this
software on appropriate media to be supplied by you. BRLCAD is
most notable for running on an extremely wide variety of systems,
supporting distributed ray tracing, and providing a large set of
easy to use and well documented image manipulation tools. I use
the BRLCAD tools on a daily basis in my imaging work.

The following is reprinted from BRLCAD distribution literature:

-----------------------------------------------------------------
To obtain a copy of the BRL-CAD distribution, you must send
enough magnetic tape for 22 Mbytes of data. Standard nine-track
half-inch magtape is the strongly preferred format, and can be
written at either 1600 or 6250 bpi, in TAR format with 10k byte
records. For sites with no half-inch tape drives, Silicon Graph-
ics and SUN tape cartridges can also be accommodated. We will
fill this tape and return it to you along with a copy of the do-
cumentation.

With your tape, you must also enclose a letter indicating (a) who
you are, (b) what the BRL-CAD package is to be used for, (c) the
equipment and operating system(s) you plan on using, (d) that you
agree to the conditions listed below.

It is vital that your letter include a sentence acknowledging
your agreement to the conditions, such as "We agree to the condi-
tions of the distribution listed in your letter". This software
is an unpublished work that is not generally available to the
public, except through the terms of this limited distribution.
The United States Department of the Army grants a royalty-free,
nonexclusive, nontransferable license and right to use, free of
charge, with the following terms and conditions:

1. The BRL-CAD package source files will not be disclosed to
third parties.

2. BRL will be credited should the software be used in a product
or written about in any publication. BRL will be referenced as
the original source in any advertisements.

3. The software is provided "as is", without warranty by BRL.
In no event shall BRL be liable for any loss or for any indirect,
special, punitive, exemplary, incidental, or consequential dam-
ages arising from use, possession, or performance of the
software.

4. When bugs or problems are found, you will make a reasonable
effort to report them to BRL.

5. Before using the software at additional sites, or for permis-
sion to use this work as part of a commercial package, you agree
to first obtain authorization from BRL.

6. You will own full rights to any databases or images you
create with this package.

Send all requests to:

	Director
	US Army Ballistic Research Laboratory
	ATTN: SLCBR-VL (Mr. Mike Muuss)
	APG, MD 21005-5066

[Note that foreign requests no longer need to be handled differently.]

If you already have the BRL-CAD package, and are after a newer
release, send us another tape and provide enough information for
us to identify your earlier request. Try to include the number
written on your previous BRL-CAD tape label if any.

When you send us a tape, it may take some time to get it back.
We can only continue to offer this distribution for free by mak-
ing the processing of tapes a relatively low priority item in our
already busy schedules. Your patience is appreciated.

Best Wishes,
