[comp.graphics.visualization] Computer Art & Theory

abosse@reed.UUCP (shoelace) (03/25/91)

I am doing some research on Art Theory in relation to Computer Art, and I was
wondering if someone could provide me with some recent (ie. mid-1990 - present)
references to magazines, journals, exhibitions etc. which have addressed this
issue.

The reason I am posting this is that a search through Art Index, RILA and the
Art Bibliography came up with only a few accessible (American) entries.

The bounds of 'Art Theory' are still very wide at this point in my research (I
am working towards a BA thesis proposal...) but should discuss issues such as
'originality', 'ontological status', 'reference & meaning', 'reader/viewer-
response' and so on...I am especially interested by theoretical works (or works
of art) which tackle the problematics of textual/visual 'meaning.'

Much thanks,

I don't know if this is specific enough for you, but I think 'Leonardo', the
journal of the ISAST would be a good place to look for articles in these or
related areas. The SIGGraph '90 Exhibition Catalog, published as a
supplemental issue of 'Leonardo' entitled "Digital Image - Digital Cinema"
contains articles relating the theory and practise of digital imaging to
those of photography and film aesthetics. Two articles you *must* read are
"Language and the Early Cinema" by Rudolph Arnhiem (author of "Art and Visual
Perception"), and "Film Theory for the Digital World: Connecting the Masters
to the New Digital Cinema", a six page essay on the relationships between the
film/animation medium and computer graphics, written by John Andrew Berton,
Jr.
I'm investigating ideas in electronic sculpture/installation and
computer-augmented performance art, with the latter being practically
non-existent as far as any magazine articles are concerned! I'd be
interested to hear how your research progresses. Good Luck!
