[comp.graphics.visualization] Bay Area Siggraph mtg: Image Compression - 8 pm 4/23 @ Exploratorium

nebulus@well.sf.ca.us (Bruce McDiffett - no good deed goes unpunished) (04/18/91)

The Bay Area chapter of ACM/Siggraph - the Special Interest Group on
Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques - announces its April
meeting:

		 	   IMAGE COMPRESSION:

		       JPEG, MPEG, AND THE FUTURE

			      Richard Webb
			    Software Engineer
			   C-Cube Microsystems

				8:00 pm
			    Tuesday, Apr. 23
		      Exploratorium, McBean Theater
			    San Francisco, CA

This month's meeting will take a detailed look at two significant
standards for image compression - the JPEG (Joint Photographic
Experts Group) standard for still images, and the MPEG (Motion
Picture Experts Group) standard for sequences of images. Richard
will discuss the mathematical basis for these compression
algorithms, the strengths and weaknesses of the two algorithms,
and the details of the algorithms as specified in the standards
documents. He will demonstrate both hardware and software
implementations of JPEG. He will also comment on some of the
experiences C-Cube has had in implementing the JPEG algorithm in
silicon.

This meeting should appeal to potential implementors interested in
the bit-level details of JPEG and MPEG, and is intended to answer
the questions that arise when trying to write JPEG software. It
should also interest systems architects who want to know the
tradeoffs between software, board-level, and chip based
implementations of image compression. It will also be of general
interest to anyone who wants to see if they can tell the
difference between an original image and an image that's been
through JPEG compression. There will be working JPEG hardware at
the meeting, running on a Macintosh IIci. There may also be some
prototype MPEG hardware as well, but that's not yet confirmed.

Richard Webb is a software engineer at C-Cube Microsystems, developers
of JPEG and MPEG compression chips. He is responsible for systems
architecture in the research division at C-Cube.

Bay Area Siggraph meetings are always free and open to anyone.
This meeting will probably be pretty crowded, so come early for a good seat.

Directions to The Exploratorium

The Exploratorium is located between Lombard and Marina in north
San Francisco, near the Golden Gate Bridge and Crissy Field.
The McBean Theater entrance is at the northwest end of the
building.
