[comp.graphics.visualization] 3D plus scalar visualization

dirish@glab1.math.utah.edu (Dudley Irish) (05/20/91)

We have a common enough problem. We have a regular grid of points in
3D where each point has a scalar value. We want to display this as a
solid with with the cubes that correspond to the points colored in
relation to the value at that point. I hope that despite this
questionable description you understand what I mean.

The tricky bit is that we have to do some sort of transparency so that
you can see all the cubes. All of this is pretty standard, in fact we
have two programs (a demo and AVS) that will do it mostly. Its that
mostly that has got us stuck.

The reason that I want a package with source code that does this,
preferably under X, is so I can modify it to animate the pictures. If
you have a package that does this sort of thing or know of a freeware
package that does, please send me mail. If you want your package to
be able to do single frame animation recording and just haven't gotten
to it, lets talk.

For those of you interested in the details, the data comes from a
model of wave propagation in the heart muscle.

Thanks,
