I spotted a new C++ book in my local bookstore today: Developing C++ Software Russel Winder John Wiley & Sons, 1991 ISBN 0 471 92384 2 I have some hope that this book will end my quest for a good C++ book for undergraduates who do not know C or Pascal already. The book is derived from the author's notes for a second semester course that is an introduction to C++ for students whose first course used a functional language. Since that is exactly my situation, I was immediately interested. It is likely that I will make this book required and Horstmann's "Mastering C++" (which I like very much but slightly misses my target audience) optional. I recommend that anyone attempting to teach undergraduates C++ should take a look at it. This is not a review; I haven't examined the book carefully enough yet. Maybe later, I'll post one.
