[comp.windows.ms.programmer] DDK: Comm Driver -- anyone rewriting?

Has anyone spent anytime looking at recoding the Windows 3.0
Communication Driver to support the 16550 UART?

If so, how easy (in Windows terms) is it to add additional 
chip support?  How are the buffers setup?  

I am looking to add support for enhanced chips on the hardware
level but leaving the virtualized comm ports the same (16450).

Any suggestions?
