[comp.windows.ms.programmer] DDK Woes - AFM to PFM conversion

haglind@cg-atla.UUCP (Barbara Haglind) (01/08/91)

Howdy fellow MS/Winners:

I'm back in the DDK, and I tell ya, I'm stuck.

I've been trying to generate the sample PostScript printer driver provided
by MSCorp themselves, and I've been running into troubles here and troubles
there. My latest and most stymiying (?) trouble is the problem I'm having
with the generation of PFM files from AFM files.

I read the docs provided, but it wasn't until I looked into the make files
that I discovered AFM.EXE. This program supposedly will generate
the PFM files. Problem is it complains about nearly every single AFM
having undefined characters. It complains about "ring (#202), Gcaron,
Idot" and such. These do appear to be characters special to a particular
font, and I am truly concerned these problems in building the PFM will bite
me later when I try to use these fonts with a live printer/imager.

What I would like:

	- hints about where in this documentation I should be looking
for answers (if they exist IN THE DOCUMENTATION)
	- clues about what these errors really mean
	- a description of AFM.EXE and the accompanying AFMTOPFM.DAT
ya know, what it is, what it really means when it
complains about these "unknown" characters, why does
the afmtopfm database file only show name conversions
between various fontnames and MS font names, why doesn't
it resolve this unknown char problem. Simple things
		like that :-) .

Thank you for any and all help you can give,
