Before the Christmas break, PC Week said that Borland was readying their new Turbo C++, with an integrated Windows Development Kit, for "shipment during the 1st quarter". Has anybody heard anything more recent? Borland did a demo (according to PC Week, I wasn't there) of the kit last May at the Windows 3.0 unvailing, so they've apparently have had the thing in good shape for a while. For those that haven't heard anything about this: Borland is going to release a Turbo C++ "upgrade"/new product that runs as a Windows 3.0 application. In addition, it will let you write Windows 3.0 applications. The editor, debugger, etc will be actual windows applications, not just the IDE in a DOS (text) based window. The interesting thing that I've heard is that Borland is writing their own SDK libraries and integrating them with the Turbo C++ libs, not relying on the MS SDK. So we'll get full C++ in this product. Zortech, on the other hand, has a compiler that is "DOS based" (i.e. like the current version of Turbo C++), that lets you link in the MS SDK libs. Zortech doesn't supply their own SDK libs -- you have to buy the MS SDK to develop windows applications with their compiler. I expect a good side effect from the Borland product: Since the debugger is a windows application, I don't think we'll have to use a dual monitor for debugging. Yea Borland!!!! Anybody that has an ATI Wondershit card will appreciate that. The ATI card (at least in my Gateway 2000) needs to be plugged into an 8 bit slot before it will work with a mono card. The 8 bit software setup isn't good enough, besides the ATI dual monitor configuration in the software setup only gives you EGA/Mono. You can't set up a dual monitor and retain VGA. And when you plug the card into an 8 bit slot, you've lost your "regular" VGA when you're not working with the Windows/Codeview debugger stuff. Apparently Borland had the foresite to get away from this method of windows debugging. So --- When does it ship????? I'm tired of not being able to debug. I've got a call to a MS SDK function that sends the computer to never-never land and I don't know why. The function containing the call worked when it was in the main module, I just moved the function to its own file and now it hangs reaaalllll good. Wasted two weeks chasing this thing... grumble -- grumble. Come on Philippe. We're waiting...
