The question is regarding development environment for Windows. From the list of frequently asked questions, I gather that SmallTalk is a viable alternative to SDK/C as a development platform for the Windows. Do I interpret this correctly ? If so, what is the difference between the run time code developed using SmallTalk and the one developed using SDK/C ? In the amount of memory it takes ? Any other differences ? Has SmallTalk for the Windows 3.0 been announced ? What's the list price ? In addition to SmallTalk environment package, does one need any additional development tools ? Please respond to Ramesh at rc05@gte.com or at loverboy@athena.mit.edu Thanx much. - Ramesh Chandak rc05@gte.com loverboy@athena.mit.edu

Smalltalk V/Windows was due out Jan 15. Last I heard they were shooting for Feb 1. It's probably not productive to speculate what the current target is. I've heard that the big problem is writing all the DLLs that'll let Smalltalk programs run on machines without the Smalltalk environment. The environment itself is a simple port of the Presentation Manager version -- betas are already circulating. The latest PC Techniques has several interesting articles on Windows development tools, including a review of ST (based on the beta, obviously). If you have another version of Smalltalk and aren't entitled to an educational discount, you might want to call Digitalk and ask to buy an "upgrade". But given the number of high-level Windows tools that are promised for the next couple of months, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for this puppy. -- ergo@netcom.uucp (until 5 Feb 91) Isaac Rabinovitch ergo@netcom.com (after 5 Feb 91) Silicon Valley, CA netcom!ergo@apple.com {apple, amdahl, claris}!netcom!ergo (specific statement withheld at this time for operational reasons)
