[comp.windows.ms.programmer] DOS extender and Windows 3.0

aaa@media01.UUCP (Anton Aardenburg) (02/15/91)

I have the following problem:

- I want to run a big application in 386 mode
- I want this application to use the Windows 3.0 graphics facilities, it's
not necessary to have it running under Windows 3.0 completely
- The application should run in extended memory (I've got plenty of that)

In the past, I did not use Windows 3.0, as I had written my own window
environment. I could run my application in 386 mode, with the aid of
PharLap's DOS Extender (and a WATCOM C8.0 / 386 compiler). My application
was running in extended memory.
Right now, I want to port the application to Windows 3.0 (partially ?),
and use it's graphic facilities to draw (in) my own windows.
The advantage of this approach for me would be, that I will be
independent of changes in the graphical interface.

I have heard that PharLap is developing a new DOS Extender for
Windows 3.0 support (to be used in conjunction with my WATCOM compiler),
but that's really all I know. Is it possible with this configuration
to access the Window graphic routines from my application?
Could somebody tell me if that would be a solution for my problem,
and what are the alternatives I have?
Or should I wait till Windows supports 386 applications, and make my
application a complete Window application (that would be a much more
complex approach).

Please let me know if you have ANYTHING that could help me with this
long-term decision.

						Thanks in advance.
