In our Departmental computer lab it has been suggested that we move to a totally windows based operation of our PC's by one of the faculty advisors. One of the major concerns that came up was security of a system while using windows. We're mainly concerned with keeping a degree of security on the PIF's EXE's etc.., controlling how and what you can do if you shell out, and preventing exit from windows. Moreover, we would like to password protect the functions we disable. Our main security concern is that of people deleting essiental program files 'accidently' or other things that can happen when the full powered command prompt is in the hands of somebody that "thinks" they know what they are doing, plus your general security concerns (unauthorized software, viruses, copying etc..). When somethig happens to the software on a machine we resort to blanking the 200 meg hard drive and restoring the files from a tape backup. Not that this is difficult, just taking down a station for 45min to an hour in a heavy traffic lab is tedious. Any suggestions about anything out there comericially or otherwise would be greatly appreciated. Reply by post or E-mail I'm not picky...
