[comp.windows.ms.programmer] Borland C++ runtime confusion

mcovingt@athena.cs.uga.edu (Michael A. Covington) (03/18/91)

There was an exchange of messages recently about whether you have to pay
Borland an *extra* $150 or so for the right to distribute programs
written with C++.

If so, this would be very un-Borland-ish. Even people at Borland seem to
have contradicted each other on this matter.

I think I figured out what might be going on. If it's like other Borland
products, there is no extra charge to distribute software compiled with
their compiler, BUT if you want to possess the SOURCE code to the runtime
library (for purposes of modifying it or writing programs that depend on
its inmost details), you can buy THAT for about $150 more.

Could that be what created the confusion?

Speaking of things that sound very un-Borlandish.. has anyone else
read their latest (BC++) "no nonsense licence agreement".. lots of silly
stuff in there nowadays.. For example, If I distribute a program compiled
with BC++, which contains the binary form of one or more library routines,
or even just the startup code (contained in ALL compiled programs unless
one goes to the bother of rewriting it from scratch), then I am "required"
to visibly copyright my program !!! But they do not say what form of
copyright is required, so perhaps I can get away with:

I like to give my code away, not restrict its usage!!
