The Cruising Club of America Newport/Bermuda race committee, in its infinite wisdom, has decreed that all boats this year will need a single sideband radio on board. If the radio operates in the ham bands, a licensed operator is also required. We're reluctant to spend the $2000 to $5000 required to buy a new marine SSB transceiver. So we're in desperate need of either: 1) A really cheap marine SSB tranceiver - new or used, borrow, rent, or buy - it needn't necessarily be operable - we'll fix it, or 2) a licensed ham with (preferably offshore) sailing experience to go along on the race. We've located a ham tranceiver we can borrow. The race starts June 18 at Newport, Rhode Island. On average the trip takes five days though there's no guarantee. The boat is a C&C 35 with a fairly good record in previous races (a 2nd, a 4th, and a 5th in class). This boat is "campaigned" on a tight budget (i.e. expenses are shared, pay your own air fare back or sail back if you like) but we eat well.
