[comp.windows.ms.programmer] *** CHANGING IRQx TO SUPPORT MORE THAN 2 COM PORTS ***

rdthomps@vela.acs.oakland.edu (Robert D. Thompson) (04/25/91)

I have read the FAQ and I have seen this conversation before.

The problem with multiple and simultaneous use of more than two
com ports is obviously because only IRQ3 and IRQ4 are supported
	by most devices.

However, some devices allow you to set the IRQ. I have a
modem that allows this. So...I set my modem to IRQ2 and
changed the system.ini file appropriately. But Windows
crashes (i.e. exits to DOS) as soon as I open that
	communications port.

	So, MY QUESTION !!!

If I can set the IRQ for a particular device, Can I Get Windows
to Support more than TWO com ports simultaneously ???

Or do I have to wait for 3.1

	Thanks...Regards |(8>

You can do this on a EISA or MCA machine, so the doco says.
I think SYSINI.TXT (or SYSINI2) has some stuff on this and there
was also some stuff in Interrupt Sharing on OnLine.

Basically, forget it. I think it is hackable. I have done it in DOS
on non-MCA machines but you have to hack your coms cards IRQ output
line - not pretty. I did it on a multi-port card so it was easy to set
up.

But basically no, unless you are one of the four people with an EISA
or MCA machine.
