[comp.windows.ms.programmer] WINDOWS 3.0 enhanced mode problem

randy@ms.uky.edu (Randy Appleton) (04/25/91)

I cannot run "win /3". If I do so I get the opening screen, and then get
dumped to dos. Following that, my floppy disk suffers intermediate errors.
Even from dos, if I have tried "win /3" in the past my floppy acts up.
This is only solved by a hard re-boot.

"win /s" works fine. Absolutly no problem. Floppy works fine.

Even worse, two friends of mine have the same hardware setup, and theirs works
fine. The only hardware differences are:

	- They have 2MEG installed by the vender.
	- I had 1 MEG, and then had three more installed later by a local shop.
Near as I can tell, nothing (video bios, etc.) is mapped into RAM.

	- I have a modem in COM1, and a mouse in COM2. COM3 exists, but has
	  absolutly nothing on it.
	- They have only a mouse in COM1, and nothing else.

I'm about ready to send the machine back to the vendor, which I *DONT* want
to do. Does anybody have any bright ideas????

-Randy
The rest of my hardware configuration:
	4 Meg RAM
	386 SX
	AMI Bios
	3.5 inch floppy
	40 MEG IDE Hard drive
Super VGA card using the vendors driver (same as my friends whose machines
											work)

	I'm sitting at a DECstation and not my 386, so I can't double-check
myself, but maybe the problem is that windows doesn't realize you installed
the extra 3 MB. Is the smartdriver in the config.sys or the call to it in
the autoexec.bat? When you run windows in standard mode, check under one of
the menus for the About Windows and it should be 2 MB if it is seeing beyond
the 1 MB. If I'm way off base, let me know...

I *sometimes* have the same problems, in that I get to the Title screen,
then get the hourglass, then when the screen redraws ( and I guess the
programs in the win.ini load=c:\... line start to load ) I get kicked out to
DOS.
I have an Agiler mouse and was told not to load the driver in DOS B4 I
started windows and let windows take care of the mouse. But changing this did
not help.
So I nuked the load call to Change cursor in win.ini, which just
happens to change the default cursor to my cursor at about the same time
it usually kicks me out to DOS, and I haven't had any further problems
( where's that piece of wood, damn plastic office furniture :).

Cheers
	Brenden.
