I've received 11 responses to my posting, and here's a short summary
of what I got.
First of all, a lot of people gave examples of games I could use as a model.
The list is:
WinRisk
I got a lot of requests for this one. However, I think Risk is pretty boring,
so I won't do it. However, the strategy aspect of Risk could be the basis,
it's only that Risk is too simplified.
Archon/Combat Chess
Good idea. I liked Archon a lot. Unfortunately, it falls under the 'too
much animation' category. The idea of a playing board where the action
zooms in for one-on-one combat does sound interesting.
These were the more popular ideas. Other people mentioned certain features
from other games. These include:
Plenty of stragety
Rule-based (I'm all for this one)
user-defined characters/enemies/spaceships (I'll leave it for Version 2)
Wide-range conquest (perhaps an option)
three-dimensional (forget it)
programmable universe (forget it)
The last two ideas are just too complex. Besides, I want the computer to
do all the work, so why should I make the universe? No flames, please.
Basically, all the ideas were good, but vague. Now I have to design the
specifics. This is where you come in. I need a list of all people who
want to be:
Programmers
Ideas-people (very specific, please)
Beta-testers
The code will be public domain. I might make it freeware, though.
A few more words. Here are my programming goals:
Modular - easily ported to Mac/OS2/Xwin, etc. I don't know how easy
          this will be, though
Extensive GUI use - we're going all the way
Room for expansion - Like the Ultima Series
Right now, I need specifics, like exactly how the game should be
designed. I'm posting this to four groups, so I'm looking for a lot
of feedback.
