|Hi.

|A simple question that I think belongs here, instead of the video or computer
|graphics groups. I want to design a workstation that has video included. The
|question is what ways can I do it and which is the best in picture quality,
|refresh rate, and cost. The ability to sync the video with real time data is
|important. An example would be, a rocket lifting off and the video is shown
|on your screen, while data your collecting about the liftoff is also shown.
|
|I started looking into it and am getting overwhelmed by the number of platforms
|(IBM,DEC,MAC,SUN...), boards(matrox,targa,SFPS...), and video chips(Intel....)

What you want is called the Commodore Amiga
A3000, with some sort of genlock or timebase
corrector attached. You also should inquire
about such products as the NewTek Video Toaster,
a fully configured effects processor with an
	NTSC paint program etc. etc.

The Amiga hardware is designed to be NTSC and
PAL compatible; it employs custom blitter and
video scheduler chips, as well as 4 channels of
sound support. The CPU is a 68030 at 25Mhz
with 68882 floating point unit. A 68040 cpu
add-in will be available shortly. SCSI interface
is builtin, and an ethernet card may be provided.

	Either AmigaDos, a real-time multitasking
	message-passing O/S, or Amiga Unix System V
Release 4 is available on the hardware.
Prices for everything are currently *very*
	competitive.
