[net.ham-radio] SET Weekend Approaching

sjb (10/09/82)

This year's Simulated Emergency Test will be held the weekend of 16
and 17 October. For those of you who don't know about or are unfamiliar
with the SET, it is an annual drill, usually held during some weekend in
October, designed to prepare traffic nets of the Amateur Radio
Emergency Service (ARES) and National Traffic System (NTS) for
operational during a local, state, or national emergency (though
we all hope that those conditions will never occur.) Member nets
usually hold extra drill sessions in addition to or replacement of
regular sessions, and they receive points for each person that checks
in and for each piece of traffic passed. If you have never participated
in a traffic net, this is a perfect opportunity to experience it and
see how you like it. You will not be required to pass or take traffic,
but if you want to, all the better! If you do not know of any local
nets, ask amateurs around your area for information.

Note to all New Jersey amateurs:
If you live in or near the Union County area (Union county and all
surrounding counties) or plan to be there during SET weekend and want
to participate in the SET, the Tri-County Emergency and Traffic Net
(TCETN) will be holding sessions at 0930, 1230, 1530, and 1930 EDT
on both days (the 16th and 17th). Operating frequency will probably
be 147.255 MHz (TX +600 kHz) during all sessions, but if it will be
different for any sessions, I will post a note here before the SET.
Please feel free to check in at any time; the sessions do not run
long.

Hope to see you on the air.
