[comp.windows.open-look] SUN Sparc Ipc---openwindows

govindar@eniac.seas.upenn.edu (Rajasekaran Govindarajan ) (12/02/90)

Hi,

I have a SUN SPARCstation IPC running SUNOS 4.1 and supports openwindows
(X11/NeWS). I also have 3 X-terminals : they are all NCD-19.
I would like to get some pointers for the folowing questions.

(these may be too simple for a lot of networkers... )

1. Is X11/NeWS (openwindows version 2) networkable?
	(if I phrased it wrongly,
can I run this openwindows over the network).	Is it possible to run
a display manager from my Sparc station? and have the server
running for the 3 X-terminals so that one could run client programs
from the X-terminals. These X-terminals have their own ip addresses
and are on the ethernet; so is the sparc ipc.

2. If it is possible to do the above, where do I start? Apart from the default
window manager olwm (OpenLook WM) is there any other wm runnig on this?
Is there a display manager available on X11/NeWS for such purpose?

3. The option -noauth seems to play an important role in all this, but the man
page about this is very confusing. is -noauth in any way similar to
	xhost on X11?

I know that item #1. is possible for X11.
(we have it running with xdm--X display manager).
Since X11/NeWS is compatible with X11 we want to have it this
way. My openwindows on sparc is running perfectly alright
(with the console as the diplay unit).

I am not very much worried about sunview compatibility, since I will
not be running this with or on sunview.
I very much appreciate any pointers in this direction. I will summarize the
responses and post it later.

Thanks a lot.........
