[comp.windows.open-look] install openwindows 2.0 problem

chen@sol.AER.COM (Chin-tien Chen) (01/18/91)

I need information about installing OpenWindows v2.0 to a Sun3
running SunOS 4.0.3. The Openwindows v2.0 came bundled with the SunOS 4.1.1
distribution tapes. For some reason, we are not ready to install the SunOS
4.1.1. So I have to extract the openwindows files from the SunOS 4.1.1
distribution tapes. I found that there are 4 files for the openwidows v2.0.
Sun support people told me that the files are in compressed tar format. The
sun person even told me that I am supposed to do the 4.1.1 upgrade and
include the openwindows in the upgrade or run the add_services to add
openwindows after the 4.1.1 upgrade. He also said that Sun will not be able to
help if I try to install it by extracting the files "manually".

So far I have extracted the four files, uncompressed them and untar'ed them.
After making links for etc and include in the $OPENWINHOME directory and
running install_filemgr and install_cmgr, I am able to start the openwindow to
do most of the things except running some demo programs like Ico in the X11
demos, I got "Ambiguous output redirect." in the cosole window. I am sure
I will encounter more problems when I try to compiled source codes.

Our sun systems consists of a Sun3-280 file server and 9 sun3-60 workstations
running SunOS 4.0.3.

The four openwindows file are 1. Users 2. Demo 3. Fonts 4. Programmers.
I intend to install everything in it. If you have installed openwindows v2.0
under similar kind of conditition, please share your experience with me.
Any kind of help will be deeply appreciated!
