hr propagation forecast bulletin nr 47 from arrl headquarters
newington ct movember 22, 1982
to all radio amateurs bt

in the past week, the solar flux rose from 162 on the 17th to 206 on
the 21st. this was the highest since october 1, and it was enough to
push the f layer muf over 50 mhz. thus cycle 21 became the first
solar cycle in which 50 mhz was open for f layer dx in four
consecutive years. generally low geomagnetic activity made recent
days notable for the excellent quality of hf propagation as well.

the solar flux has been above readings for the previous solar
rotation since november 5, and this will continue for a few more
days. there was a major aurora the evening of november 21, degrading
hf propi ion but providing an exceptional vhf auroral opening
across northern usa and adjacent canadian areas. there will be more
disturbances through november 29, but in between there will be good
hf conditions and very likely more 50 mhz dx. at the end of november
the solar flux and muf will be lower, but hf conditions will be good
to excellent in early december.

american sunspot numbers ranged from 93 on the 11th to 140 on the
17th, for a mean of 109 ar
