[comp.windows.open-look] Font installation woes...

   I've been working for several weeks trying to get a font installed for a
research project we're working on here at Auburn. Unfortunately, I've exhausted
all of my local resources: could any of you kindly help me???

   Here's the problem: I have a custom-designed font in BDF format named
"csd1423.bdf". I want to install it under OpenWindows on our Sun
SPARCstation1+. It looked straightforward, and here's what happened:
   1. I converted the BDF font to .fb format using convertfont. Here's what
happened:
      convertfont -S -t -b csd.1423.bdf
      csd1423.bdf->./cs142323.fb
   2. Next I tried to build a font family using bldfamily. Here's what
happened:
      bldfamily
      * csd.14-23        ./csd.1423.ff (Encoding: unknown)
      cat: ./Compat.list: No such file or directory

   What's going on here? Any suggestions? In addition, can anyone recommend
ANY documentation on creating & installing fonts?

   I'm pretty sure the BDF file is OK. Under X11R4 and twm, I used the bdftosnf
utility to turn it into a .snf font, and then I used "xset fp+ ...." and "xset
fp rehash" to install it. The font loaded correctly and looked fine.

   Thanks in advance for any help or insights!!!!!! -> Kelly Morrison
