[comp.windows.open-look] Endorsement for olvwm

brown@ftms.UUCP (Vidiot) (05/06/91)

Last week I brought up olvwm to give it a go. Not only did we go with it,
we are running with it.

So far the program has been performing flawlessly. It even fixes a problem
we have been having with FrameMaker 2.1X.

Some of you may have read/heard that changing the keyboard focus from the main
document window to one of the other Frame windows, like the Paragraph Format
window, causes the insertion marker, or selected text, to no longer be there.
Many a time I would click on the border of the Paragraph Format window only to
lose the document's insertion marker. It was very fustrating.

Then along comes olvwm and the problem went away. I can now operate inside
of the various format windows, when I don't have to change any text from the
keyboard, and I won't lose the insertion marker or selected text. If I have
to enter a value, I can select the window to change keyboard focus and I won't
lose the insertion marker or selected text. Nine out of ten times under olwm
I would and it was a real pain to get it to work correctly.

If you are using FrameMaker, it is highly suggested that you bring up olvwm.
You will be very happy that you did. We are around here.

I very much agree. I compiled olvwm and did a s/olwm/olvwm/ on my
.xinitrc, exited from OW and fired it up again. Everything worked as
usual, except that I could move around between (virtual) screens. This
is nice as it makes you work as usual and slowly get used to using
virtual screens.

I like olvwm a lot. Having extra screens handy is nice, ie. a
news-reader screen, a mail-screen, etc. Being able to jump to a new
screen when you get a new idea or for demoing something is neat.
I'm still trying to figure out a good virtual screen setup, but the
nice thing is that I can *develop* it at an idle pace while doing
other things.

I've had no problems with olvwm. It works, it does everything olwm
does, and it provides useful new features. I like it. A lot.

Oh, and it works with both X11R4 and Open Windows 2.0.

I also tried this, based on the previous endorsement of olvwm and 2.1X.
Unfortunately, my problems haven't gone away! Would someone who has
had their 2.1X problem (exactly as vidiot explained it) solved please
mail me their .Xdefaults file? M<aybe I have something wrong there.
