[comp.windows.open-look] "color not in database" and "can't contact the NeWS display"

tynor@prism.gatech.EDU (STEVE TYNOR) (05/24/91)

I consistantly get the following warnings whenever I start up an Xview
program:

XView warning: icon_obj:color name not in database (Icon package)
XView warning: icon_obj:color name not in database (Icon package)
XView warning: icon_obj:color name not in database (Icon package)

Sometimes it's a different package (e.g., Canvas), but I always get the
error. This is on a standalone Sparcstation IPC running SunOS 4.1.1 and
OW 2.0, both installed 'out of the box' from the 4.1.1 tape.

Also, none of the NeWS applications seem to be able to connect to the
NeWS server - Pageview, the demo programs, etc. all give me this error:

pageview: Can't contact the NeWS display

Openwin is being started with the -noauth switch.

None of this strangeness happened before I reloaded the OS from tape
(that is, the preinstall version worked fine). I've searched TFM for
clues, but have come up dry - can anyone help?

Progress means replacing something wrong with something more subtly wrong.
