[gnu.emacs.help] how does one customize gnu emacs ?

How does one customize gnu emacs?
(I am familiar with microEmacs, which reads a .emacsrc file)

Where can i get some examples of emacs customization files?

I am especially interested in binding keys to different functions
so stuff works the way I expect it to.
