[gnu.emacs.help] Writing Info files

rms@GNU.AI.MIT.EDU (Richard Stallman) (04/19/91)

I don't think it's advisable for people to write INfo files directly,
and for that reason I think that the work being done on making this
easier is misdirected.

Why not write Info files directly? Because, by writing a Texinfo file
instead, you can make a printed manual as well as an Info file. It's
very useful for all GNU documentation to be printable as well as
browsable; probably that is true for your documentation projects as
well.

Another reason it might be reasonable to write info files directly
(like a wysiwyg editor, only without much wys or wyg) is that it
seems possible to automatically generate a texinfo file from an info
file. For the cases where there is information loss going from
texinfo to info, the user may supply some annotations that may be
hidden during normal info mode but shown during edit info mode.
But we probably have to wait for version 19 to implement this fully.
