[gnu.emacs.help] problems with 18.57 and streams: typeahead broken

adk@csd4.csd.uwm.edu (Andrew D Kailhofer) (06/28/91)

Howdee:

I'm looking for a little help. I'm the proud new administrator of a
newly upgraded NCR Tower 32/750 (the 68040 model), and while I've been
using gmacs for a while (I've built on several machines, etc.) I'm
stymied here.

Configuration:
	NCR Tower 32/750, os 1.0.0 (System V 3.2 - shadow passwords +
[get this] a steams-based tty system [really! you can do an
ioctl(I_LOOK, fileno(stdin)) and get a module name and everything])
gcc 1.39 with a minor patch that I'm not sure I trust yet to
do the right things for the 68040.

The problem:
Typeahead doesn't work! The first time I built emacs was on
an AT&T 3B2 running SVR3.2.1, and typeahead worked. It was very nice.
Now, it doesn't! Specifically, I mean that if I do ^V^V^V I have to
wait while it redraws all three scroll-up's. If I do an I-Search, it
jumps through all of the characters, not just up to where it's at now
(you all understand what that means if your typeahead works, so I'm
not going to make that more clear).
So that more of you might be inclined to respond (since I
expect that I'm one of about 3 people in the world running the 750),
This same problem existed on my Tower 32/700 and /500 (so I surmise it
should also for the /300) while running 18.56. I just found out (I
never noticed) that the 300/500/700 machines also had a streams-based
tty subsystem, so this problem should apply to the rest of you
just-before-the-3000s-were-announced folks, too. I didn't complain on
the previous revs, since I knew I was going to upgrade hardware and
software soon, anyway.

Help would be appreciated!
