In a recent article, scjones@thor.UUCP (Larry Jones) writes: > In addition, the standard contains a > number of errors, inconsistencies, ambiguities, and violations of > the formalisms. The SGML standard is in dire need of interpretation > and revision -- unfortunately, unlike ANSI standards which clearly > specify how to go about submitting comments and requesting > interpretations, ISO standards provide no clues at all. I just came back from the last meeting of ISO/JTC1/SC18/WG8 in Galway, Ireland. Our group is in charge of, among other things, developping and maintaining SGML and its related standards. To answer Larry's message, I would like pass on a resolution that was taken by the group: WG8 instructs the Editor of ISO 8879 (SGML) to conduct the five-year review of that standard as required by ISO/IEC Directives, and to make recommendations for its future development. WG8 believes that any modifications to SGML should be upward compatible. This review was started at the last meeting and will continue at the next meeting of WG8 being held January 14 to 18 in Oak Ridge, TN. If you are interested in contributing to the review of the standard you should contact our National Standardization Body or the SGML User's Group (Which has an official liaison with WG8). If you cannot participate directly to the meetings, you can send your contributions by mail and they will be reviewed nationally and/or internationally.
