[comp.text.sgml] Looking for Simple Application

jxr@thumper.bellcore.com (Jonathan Rosenberg) (06/13/91)

Hello,

As part of a standardization effort for a kind of multimedia e-mail
capability, we are interested in finding an already-existing SGML
application that allows the specification of multi-font structured text.
In other words, we would love to find an application that allows the
specification of plain text, with the ability to specify some simple
formatting things like font characteristics (e.g., fixed/variable width,
size), line formatting (fill/no fill, centering, left/right flush).

Ideally, documents using the application would be very simple to parse &
process: i.e., use the reference concrete syntax only (or is the core
syntax even simpler?) & not require any complicated processing to
determine the style at a point in the document (no complicated styule
sheet inheritance, e.g.).

Any one know of any appropriate applications?

Well, I don't know whether it as simple as you would like, but we've
reconstructed most of LaTeX using SGML, and then use the Amsterdam
SGML parser to map documents back into LaTeX for printing. This gives
us complete compatibility with the de facto standard in our field,
LaTeX, while allowing us to use SGML tools, such as Author/Editor, to
prepare documents.

LaTeX, and our SGML reconstruction of it, include a "letter" document
type which may be suitable for your purposes. Let me know if your
interested in more information.
