[comp.unix.programmer] Sleeping until a file exists

Is there any convenient way for a process (on Xenix 2.3.2 if that's relevant)
to sleep on the event that a known (spool) directory gets modified by the 
creation of a file in that directory?

Do you mean "sleep until the directory gets modified, then do something"
or "do something until the directory gets modified, then sleep?"
