[net.ham-radio] satellite equipment

Lauren Weinstein <lauren@vortex.UUCP> (08/10/83)

Greetings. I'm not completely sure that I'm hitting the correct
newsgroups with this message... but it's the closest I can come!

Originally I wasn't going to post this information to the net, but
I've been encouraged to do so by several individuals who felt there
might be general interest.

I have recently been offered what I consider to be a ridiculously low
purchase price for standard 4 Ghz (C-band) video satellite earth station
equipment. I follow prices in this area closely, and I have reason to
believe that the price I'm now seeing will not go lower for similar
equipment for a long time, if ever.

However, to take advantage of this opportunity, I need to find
a number of individuals or companies (the more the better) who would
be interested in the same equipment, so that a reasonable group purchase
can be made. However, the purchases must be on file before August 15
or the opportunity is lost.

I've been considering the purchase of such equipment (for general
experimentation, mostly) for quite some time, but felt that the cost
of a decent system was still too high. The current system, though
by no means "deluxe", appears to be a damn good compromise at an excellent
price, and I'd hate to let this chance slide by.

Anyway, the basic system includes an 11 foot aluminum dish (12 petals
for easy transport), 80 degree LNA (much better than the usual 120 or
(rarely) 100 degree units that are typical), dish-mounted downcoverter,
electronic polarizer (no moving parts), receiver, polar mount, cable, etc.

The basic price being offered to me is around $1150 for this package,
but I can't afford to move on this by myself. So... if you know anybody
who has been considering a similar purchase but didn't want to spend
$3K-$4K+ for most commercial units, please let me know by direct
mail as soon as possible -- maybe we can all get together and make
something happen. Thanks much.
