[rec.radio.noncomm] A Blatant Appeal...

bzs@world.std.com (Barry Shein) (08/31/90)

Let's face it, most radio stinks.

One of the few bright spots has been an NPR show HEAT! with John
Hockenberry. It's important stuff, don't believe a word I say, listen
to it on your local NPR station, in the evening (partial station list
at end of message.)

It's being cut in October, mostly due to funding reasons, but it's not
that simple. NPR is obviously going to spend money on something,
mainly they don't think people and companies who help fund NPR care
enough about this relatively new show. No, they don't do fancy
marketing surveys, it's all sort of voo-doo and anxiety, money helps.

HEAT has been doing (reasonable!) shows on hackers/crackers, Steve
"what's another word for thesaurus?" Wright, brings on NEA people and
asks them what's going on (how come no one else does that?), Tom
Robbins, experimental music, heck, John Hockenberry even has an
account on The Well and reads his mail.

[Tonight's show, 8/30, features Marvin Minsky]

This is important stuff.

What can we do to keep him on the air?

First, if you don't listen to the show, listen to it, you'll see what
I mean. But this isn't commercial radio, the world of Nielsen ratings,
mere head counts don't count.

You have to send support, money, letters, get your company to send
money etc.

Send me e-mail (bzs@world.std.com), send John e-mail
(hockoo@well.sf.ca.us or well!hockoo), send letters to NPR:

	Heat, 3rd floor
	47 Murray Street
	New York, NY 10017

If your company wants to be associated with a show that actually might
appeal to the sort of people who buy their products tell them to call
NPR and find out how they can help, call, have them call:

		Leslie Peters, NPR
		212-619-1475

Call or write your local NPR station and tell them this is important
to you.

Let's try and keep one of the few things in the media which actually
works working.
