There is a docket pending, I believe, that would eliminate the requirement
of a FCC licensed technician for repairs/adjustments of many items.
The FCC has slowly been de-regulating away to the point where someday
the commercial license won't be needed for anything. (I remember being
shocked to find out that broadcast stations no longer needed a frequency
monitor). Back when I was in the BC biz, we had to have a 1st class
licensee on duty at the transmitter all the time the transmitter was on.
I don't think that directional AM stations even need to have a full-time
1st fone (now general radio-telephone) on the staff any more, right??
