sts9 update. launch is scheduled for 1630 utc october 28. nasa is
investigating a problem with the solid fuel booster rockets that
could force a postponement, but the tests thus far have been
inconclusive. no decision has been made yet, but is expected by
october 18. currently, nasa is operating on the assumption that sts9
will lift off on schedule.

for u.s. stations, sts9 ham operations will be as follows. dr.
garriott will transmit on 145.55 mhz, with 145.53 or 145.57 as
backup. he will listen only on 144.91, 144.93, 144.95, 144.97,
144.99, 145.01, 145.03, 145.05, 145.07 and 145.09 mhz. he will not
listen on his transmitting frequency. w5lfl will transmit for the 60
seconds of each even minute and will scan the ten receive channels
for the 60 seconds of each odd minute. when calling, say columbia
w5lfl only once, followed by your call several times. for operation
to be possible, dr. garriott must be off duty and awake and the
columbia must be in the right attitude. see november qst for a
schedule of orbits that are most probable for operation.

during the flight of sts9, the goddard space flight center amateur
radio club station, wa3nan, will be retransmitting shuttle
communications on 3.860 and 147.45 mhz as long as audio is present.
additional frequencies, as conditions permit, will be 7.185, 14.295,
21.390 and 28.610 mhz. when video is available from sts9, wa3nan
will retransmit it on 439.25 mhz and it will also be sent by wa9gvk/r
on 426.25 mhz.

the deadline for submitting footage of hams working sts9 for
inclusion in the new frontiers videotape is november 17. we need
broadcast quality, 3/4 inch umatic cassettes. send the tapes to
sts9, public information office, arrl hq. all submissions must be
