[net.ham-radio] Current status of no-code

gnu@sun.UUCP (John Gilmore) (11/01/83)

I spoke with John Botowski of the FCC Personal Radio Bureau today re
the status of the no-code license. He says that the comment period and
the comment reply period have ended, there are about 5000 comments in
16 volumes, and the commission will probably decide the matter toward
the end of this year or the start of '84.

I asked specifically about the CIA rumor; his response was that in
looking thru the comments he had not noticed any from the CIA. These
comments are available for public inspection if you're in DC, and there
is a commercial copy service which will copy them for you if not.
However, John warns that they will probably charge by the hour for
search time thru 16 volumes to find what you want and thus it could get
expensive. (The comments are not ordered in any particular fashion.)
The copy service is International Transcription Service, info at
202-296-7322, if anybody is interested.
