[comp.unix.internals] machine names - is void a problem

renkel@motcid.UUCP (Will Renkel) (12/21/90)

I am located on a sun file server named "void".
I recently found out that some of my messages are not being routed
or responded to with the possible cause being the name "void".
Any word out there about such a possibility?

The problem is, a site already exists with that name, most of your mail
is happily being bounced from it. Unless you are using FQDN's your uucp
mail and anything else addressed to just 'void' is bouncing off of the
machine 'void.lonestar.org' or just 'void' as the uucp maps know it.

Easy solution, change your servers name or use FQDNs from now on.

There is a system out there with the name "void" which is operated
by Cam Fox (hi Cam!). Is it possible that your messages are not
being posted with the fully qualified domain name???
