Hello Folks, I am planning to buy a 33-MHz 386 PC from either Northgate or Gateway 2000 to run SCO UNIX Sys V. The hardware configuration I have in mind is as follows: 33-MHz 80386 PC 64K Cache RAM (25ns) 4MB of RAM (70 ns chip) 1.2 MB 5.25" & 1.44 MB 3.5" Floppy Drives (EPSON) 150 MB ESDI Hard Drive (17 ms) 10 M/bits DTR ULTRASTOR ESDI 32K Cache Controller 16 Bit VGA board w/ 1MB RAM (1024X768 resolution) 14" NEC MultiSync Monitor (1024X768 res. support) 1 Parallel/2 Serial Ports Standard 101 Keyboard MicroSoft Window 3.0 DOS 4.01 comes with the machine MicroSoft Mouse 80387 Math Co-Processor (Socket for this chip support) Clock/Calendar Phoenix Bios Now, I have two questions. First, am I missing somethings here that are important to run SCO UNIX Sys V ? Second, I know SCO Sys V runs well on Compag and AST 386-based PCs, but does it run on street-price clone like Northgate or Gateway 2000 386-based PCs ? Please help me to determine the right config. before buying...! Thank you very much in advance to those who reply. Sincerely, Thanh "Tom" Nguyen at NASA Lewis Research Center/(216)826-6619

I spoke with an SCO rep who reported very good performance running Open Desktop on the Northgate 386/33; a colleague running UNIX (don't know which implementation) on their tower version confirms. You'll need more than 4 MB if you're planning to run components beyond the Runtime (like TCP/IP, X/Windows and the like). Merge is marginal in a 4 MB box. ----------- uunet!media!ka3ovk!raysnec!shwake shwake@rsxtech
