[comp.unix.xenix.sco] DOS Emulation under SCO Xenix/UNIX

geiste@hsi.hsi.com (Doug Geiste) (04/23/91)

Other than VP/ix or ODT's virtual DOS emulation (since they both run
in 8088/86 mode), does anyone know of a software package that will
allow running AT type DOS application under Xenix/UNIX?

How lovely of SCO to have both OS's run DOS in 8088/86 mode. Pretty
sleezy marketing if you ask me...

Unfortunately I'm stuck with this DOS package that runs only on a 286/386
and need to run it under *nix.

Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Are you sure of this? I run Xenix 386 2.3.2 with vp/ix 1.1 and all the
DOS info programs, including Norton SI report a 286 processor. I don't have
any 286 specific programs to test this out, but I have no reason to
disbelieve this.

A '386 can only operate in two modes: protected mode, and real mode. In
'386 protected mode, you can run multiple virtual 8086 sessions. This
isn't a deficiency with VP/IX, its a limitation of the hardware.

The person complaining would be better served if he wrote to Intel and
complained to them about it.

Guess again. The 386 emulation of multiple virtual PC's is the limitation.
It only provides 8088 emulation. SCO had nothing to do with it. Go bitch
at Intel. (please)
