We have about 1200 entries in our passwd file on a VAX 11/750 running an old release of Mt. Xinu's 4.3BSD and this weird thing happens often when anybody changes their passwd while the load factor is over 5. A block of garbage appears in the midst of the right stuff. Have you seen the problem? Must we fix the file system code someplace? The hardware? We are not seeing the problem with other files, but few files get used as heavily as this one. On a different tack, have many people started using some other form of storing the data to speed up all access to password information? Is there some freely available set of software or updates good for one or the other of VAXen running BSD or RISC/6000s running AIX? Dick
