[comp.unix.admin] The System Administrator's Library

leyser@nitrex.UUCP ( Jeff Leyser) (11/09/90)

A while back I asked all you admin types to tell me what books the complete
sys. admin. should have. My thanks to all who responded. I have not included
every book title I was sent, as many were very specific to a particular site,
or group of users. Instead, I have compiled a list of "generic" Unix books.
Some people sent me titles & authors, some sent more info, such as ISBN
numbers, and some less, such as a title only or the authors name and a
description, such as "The BSD book by Foobar."

The list is in three section. Section one is a list of books that are not
specific to either Sys V or BSD. Section two contains BSD books, and three
contains Sys V books.

Again, my thanks to the respondents, and here are the books:

For both Sys V & BSD:
Hardcopy of the man pages for your system(s).

K&R

Any and all Nutshell books.
(These are a *big* hit. Most everyone had at least one Nutshell book.)

"Internetworking with TCP/IP" by Comer

"A Practical Guide to the Unix System", by Sobell. Benjamin/Cummings,
	1989. ISBN 0-8053-0243-3.

"Unix for Super-Users", by Foxley. Addison-Wesley, 1985.
	ISBN 0-201-14228-7.

"Unix System Administrator's Handbook", by Nemeth, Snyder, and Seebass.
	Prentice Hall, 1989. ISBN 0-13-933441-6.
(Some said this covered only BSD, others said it covered both BSD & Sys V. I
have yet to see a copy to verify either claim. Perhaps a new version has been
published?)

"Tricks of the Unix Masters", by Sage. Howard W. Sams & Co., 1987.
	ISBN 0-672-22449-6.

For BSD & derivatives (SunOS et. al.):
The Design and Implementation of the 4.3BSD Unix Operating System

The 4.3BSD book by Lefler, McKusick, Karels, and Quarterman
(These the may be the same. One person sent the title, another the author.)

The 4.[23]BSD Programmer's Manual sets (from Usenix)

For Sys V:

The SysV book by Bach

"UNIX Administration Guide For System V", by Rebecca Thomas and
Rik Farrow. Prentice-Hall, 1989, ISBN 0-13-942889-5.
