[comp.unix.admin] How to disconnect idle dialup users?

ping@cubmol.bio.columbia.edu (Shiping Zhang) (11/27/90)

Some users dialup onto the machine and hang on for hours doing nothing.
I tried to disconnect the hookup using the kill command but failed.
The idle dialup user still occupys the line with an exiting status,
but the exiting process seems never finish. Anyone can give any advice?
Thanks.

If you've a Telebit modem, register S41 can be set in tenths of
hours, from 0 (disabled) to 255. When the timer expires, the modem
hangs up the line.

(I presume you are talking about the trailblazer series of modems)
Unfortunately, not all of the Telebit modems support this feature. I have a
Trailblazer Plus and it does not have register 41.

Trailblazer+'s, if upgraded to ROM revision BC5.10A (probably any 5.x
variety) will have the register available...
