We are a small (3,500 users) UK university. Up to now we have run a mixed operating system environment, with unix as only one component. Our current mainframe is a VAXcluster running VMS; among other things it provides an archive service via FTP to our unix community. We use a third party product called V-X ARCHIVE. It keeps our users away from the physical media and avoids the need for personal archive tapes (no, tar is not an option). Our forward plan is unlikely to involve anything other than a unix platform. I'd like to hear of any archive (as distinct from backup) software in the marketplace in addition to the recent SysAdmin writeup by marcel@duteca. Comments on operational experiences would be ever better. Please email me and I'll summarise. Alan Ibbetson (ali@ukc.ac.uk)
