[comp.unix.admin] DUMP: /dev/nrst1: Device busy

pjc@melb.bull.oz.au (Paul Carapetis) (02/07/91)

Dear Netters,

We have a network of several sun workstations (3/50's, 3/60's and 386i's)
and, to make the backup of these systems easy, we purchased an EXB-8200 8mm
tape backup unit along with Consult's Autodump software from Sun Australia.

The autodump software seems to have some problems - rarely, autodump_go reports
losing contact with the the server that is being backed up, and, more often
(greater than twice in 5 dumps) it reports an error as such:

DUMP: 17.26% done, finished in 0:24
  DUMP: Broken pipe
DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted.
ERROR : Bad return status = 3

This error only seems to occur when a files system on a 386i is being dumped.

The "broken pipe" (makes you wonder!) error and the other error mentioned
above, unfortunately, leave the tape device in a busy status according to
the kernel and all attempted dumps following such an error report the
following:

  DUMP: /dev/nrst1: Device busy
  DUMP: fopen on /dev/tty fails
DUMP: Bad return code from dump: 255

The only method of resetting this busy status that I am currently aware
and/or capable of, is to reboot the system which is not often practicle or
convenient.

Has anyone out there experienced this problem? Can anyone tell me an
easier way to reset the device busy status?

Ever hopefull,
Paul
