I am in the process of learning what it takes to administer a Unix system. I have just got access to this network through the University and I'd like to use it to post questions and get some answers back from those more experienced than I. So in that that vein, here goes: 1. what is my return address for this net?? I'd rather people send replies back via e-mail and I see quite a few of you have some sort of signature file at the end of your transmissions with the addresses in place. The people here running the net aren't (weren't) to helpful on this point. Now to the really important stuff (by the way I'm running AT&T V 3.2.2 on 25 MHz AT&T machines networked together using StarLAN) 2. what does the fsck -y -s command REALLY do?? The admin manual talks about reorganizing "free lists" but what does mean and is it a process run with the file system mounted or unmounted? What are the advantages and disadvantages to running this command? 3. what is thW 'fsba' or "File System Block Analyzer" mentioned (briefly) in the admin manuals ? 4. I notice there is a system variable called "HZ". I have been told to leave it at its' current setting of 100, why? What would happen if I changed it to 78 or 107 just for the heck of it? 5. the admin . Tual mentions that you can set up printers into classes. does that meDn if your job outputs to the class instead of a specific printer the spooler will send the job to the first available printer in the class? does thaDoalso mean if you output a job to a specific printer and it's busy, another printer within the first printers' class will take the job? 6. We are using Informix database products on our systems with what they call "shared memory" (user database code is loaded once into memory by the first user calling it but then is accessable to all other users who call it). Is this type of memory arrangement an Informix process or is "shared memory" an inherently Unix function? This is probably better suited for the databases group but I thought I'd try here too. 7. I am about to receive a StarServer E with Sys V R4, who else out there has a StarServer and what has your experience been with it? Ours will be a data server for our network and I expect good results but I'd like to hear from others. 8. we're in the market for a . We're in theING front ends to runour code on. we would prefer to stay as close to AT&T Unix as we can but we're growing so fast we need to get good hardware in quickly to facilitate our growth. the 386 family has worked well for us to date but our applications are getting more and more CPU intensive. If anyone has good recommendations i'd like to see them. Well that's it for now. Thanks in advance for any replies.
